How the mulch calculator works

Mulch is sold by cubic yard (bulk) or in 2 cu ft bags. Multiply bed area by depth in feet to get cubic feet.

Formula: bags (2 ft³) = (L × W × D/12); yards = ft³ ÷ 27

13.5 bags of 2 cu ft mulch equal one cubic yard. Bulk delivery is usually cheaper above 3 yd³.

2–3 in for annual beds, 3–4 in around trees and shrubs. Deeper than 4 in can suffocate roots.
