How does the mulch calculator work?
Mulch is sold by cubic yard (bulk) or in 2 cu ft bags. Multiply bed area by depth in feet to get cubic feet.
Formula: bags (2 ft³) = (L × W × D/12); yards = ft³ ÷ 27
What else do people ask about this calculator?
How deep should playground mulch be?
9 in of loose-fill mulch protects against falls up to 7 ft; 12 in is required for equipment 8 ft or higher. Compaction reduces effective depth over time — top off yearly.
Is regular mulch safe for a playground?
No — use only engineered wood fiber (EWF) certified to ASTM F1292 or shredded rubber. Bark, hardwood and dyed landscape mulches don't meet fall-protection standards.
How many bags of mulch in a yard?
13.5 bags of 2 cu ft mulch equal one cubic yard. Bulk delivery is usually cheaper above 3 yd³.
How deep should mulch be?
2–3 in for annual beds, 3–4 in around trees and shrubs. Deeper than 4 in can suffocate roots.
