How does the mulch calculator work?

Mulch is sold by cubic yard (bulk) or in 2 cu ft bags. Multiply bed area by depth in feet to get cubic feet.

Formula: bags (2 ft³) = (L × W × D/12); yards = ft³ ÷ 27

What else do people ask about this calculator?

How wide should a mulch ring around a tree be?

Extend the ring 2–3 ft past the trunk for young trees, or ideally to the drip line (edge of the branches) for mature trees. Wider is always better for the tree.

How much mulch for a 6 ft tree ring?

A 6 ft diameter ring at 3 in deep needs about 0.26 cubic yards, or roughly 4 bags of 2 cu ft mulch.

How many bags of mulch in a yard?

13.5 bags of 2 cu ft mulch equal one cubic yard. Bulk delivery is usually cheaper above 3 yd³.

How deep should mulch be?

2–3 in for annual beds, 3–4 in around trees and shrubs. Deeper than 4 in can suffocate roots.
