Mulch Calculator for Landscape Beds
Estimate mulch for a whole yard's worth of beds.
Enter the bed length, width, and mulch depth to calculate the required volume in cubic feet and cubic yards, plus the number of standard 2 cu ft bags. The mulch calculator works for garden beds, playgrounds, tree rings, and landscape beds, helping you estimate how much mulch to buy.

How does the mulch calculator work?
Mulch is sold by cubic yard (bulk) or in 2 cu ft bags. Multiply bed area by depth in feet to get cubic feet.
Formula: bags (2 ft³) = (L × W × D/12); yards = ft³ ÷ 27
What else do people ask about this calculator?
How much mulch do I need for my whole yard?
Add up the square footage of all your beds. For 3 in depth, divide the total by 108 to get cubic yards. Bulk delivery makes sense for anything over 3 cubic yards (about 40 bags).
When should I mulch landscape beds?
Mid to late spring, after the soil has warmed but before summer weeds germinate. A second light top-up in fall protects perennials over winter.
How many bags of mulch in a yard?
13.5 bags of 2 cu ft mulch equal one cubic yard. Bulk delivery is usually cheaper above 3 yd³.
How deep should mulch be?
2–3 in for annual beds, 3–4 in around trees and shrubs. Deeper than 4 in can suffocate roots.
