Roofing Calculator for a Shed

Estimate shingle bundles for a shed roof.

Most sheds have a simple gable roof at a 4:12 or 6:12 pitch that only needs 1–2 squares of shingles. Buy full bundles — you can't order partial. A single 3-bundle square usually covers a 10×12 ft shed.

How does the roofing calculator work?

Roof area = house footprint × pitch factor. The pitch factor is √(1 + (rise/12)²): a 6:12 roof has a 1.118 factor. A "square" is 100 ft² of roof. Shingles are sold in 3 bundles per square.

What else do people ask about this calculator?

How many bundles of shingles for a 10×12 shed?

About 3 bundles (1 square). That leaves a bit extra for the ridge cap and any bad shingles in the bundle.

Do I need underlayment on a shed roof?

Yes — a single layer of 15 lb felt or synthetic underlayment. A 400 sq ft roll covers 4 squares, so one roll is enough for any shed under 12×20 ft.

How many bundles of shingles do I need?

3 bundles per roofing square. For a 40×30 ft home with a 6:12 roof: about 13.4 squares × 3 = 41 bundles.

What is a roofing square?

100 ft² of roof surface. Shingles are priced per square and packaged in bundles that cover ~33 ft² each.
