How Much Paint Do I Need? Room Calculator (2026)

What's the short answer?

A room-by-room walkthrough for sizing paint in gallons, with real 2026 coverage rates, primer rules, and the coat counts pros actually use.

MaterialCalc first-party data

180 sq ft floor / 480 sq ft wall

Median room size

2 (91% of jobs)

Coats requested

8% (leftover for touch-ups)

Average waste

TL;DR

A 12' × 15' bedroom with 8-ft ceilings needs ~1.5 gallons of paint for two coats on walls — round to 2 gallons and set aside the extra for touch-ups. At $60/gallon that's $120 in paint. Run your exact room in the paint calculator.

The coverage myth

Cans say "400 square feet per gallon" but that assumes a smooth, primed, ideal surface — a lab wall, basically. In real rooms, plan on:

Always compute at two coats unless you're doing a like-for-like refresh.

What our data shows

Across recent MaterialCalc paint jobs, 91% of estimates request two coats, median wall area is 480 sq ft, and users add an 8% waste factor so they have leftover for scuff touch-ups. Match that and you'll rarely run out mid-wall.

The formula

wall_sq_ft   = (2 × length + 2 × width) × ceiling_height − door_area − window_area
gallons      = (wall_sq_ft × coats) ÷ coverage_per_gallon

Deduct 21 sq ft per standard interior door and 15 sq ft per standard window.

Worked example

A 12' × 15' bedroom, 8' ceiling, one door, two windows:

The paint calculator subtracts doors and windows, converts to gallons at your chosen coverage rate, and shows both one- and two-coat totals.

What else do people ask about this?

How much does a gallon of paint cover?+

Manufacturer spec is 350–400 sq ft per gallon on smooth, primed drywall. Textured or unprimed surfaces drop that to 250–300.

How many gallons for a 12 × 12 room?+

About 1.5 gallons for walls with two coats at 8-ft ceilings — round to 2 gallons and keep the extra for touch-ups.

Do I always need two coats?+

Yes for a color change or a fresh drywall wall. One coat only works for a same-color refresh over a clean, unmarked surface.

Do I need primer?+

Prime bare drywall, patched areas, stains, and any dark-to-light color change. Otherwise a self-priming paint is fine over an existing painted wall.

How much does interior paint cost in 2026?+

$40–$75/gal for mid-tier interior latex; $70–$110/gal for premium (SW Emerald, BM Aura).
